“Everything exposed by the light is made clear.”
— Ephesians 5:13
As I think about my life's story and remember specific times, I feel sorry for that person: the person that I once was, the person so stuck in the darkness of sin that finding a way out looked impossible. And now that person is living in the Light and is forgiven in Christ! I am redeemed by God's perfect grace.
The Bible tells us time and time again to shine Christ's light in the darkness. Ephesians 5:12-14 tell us we must face our past to move from darkness into the light: "For it is shameful even to mention what is done by them in secret. Everything exposed by the Light is made clear, for what makes everything clear is Light. Therefore, it is said: Get up, sleeper, and rise from the dead, and the Messiah will shine on you."
The darkness is where Satan wants you to stay wrapped in guilt and shame. But you can either remain in your guilt or accept God's grace. James 5:16 tells us, "Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The urgent request of a righteous person is compelling in its effect."
Applying this verse to your life may mean speaking out your sin to God, or telling a trusted friend about something going on in your life. It could be that once you've asked Christ to forgive you, you accept it and then be honest with yourself and trust that you are forgiven. One way we follow God in obedience is by forgiving others. It is through this act of forgiveness and obedience that releases you from bondage and resentment.
This truth is what was so hard for me to accept for so many years. I felt unworthy of God's love, grace, and His forgiveness. When we stay in the darkness of shame and guilt, that only grows more guilt. Your life needs Christ's light to shine on the sin so that you can move on into your calling instead of being stuck.
Romans 8:28 has such good news for us: "We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose."
Do you believe that you can be free from the darkness in your life?
The act of forgiveness releases you from bondage and resentment.
I challenge you today to shine Christ's light in your darkness. Because where there is light, there is no darkness! Open up the Word, talk to Him, and reveal your heart to Him. I am continually praying for you. (((HUGS)))
My friend, God has a plan and a purpose for your life. We all go through trials and tests, but each one can bring us closer to God.
